The Yankee Widow by Linda Lael Miller

The Yankee Widow by Linda Lael Miller is set around Gettysburg beginning with Caroline's husband on a battlefield in 1863.  While searching for her wounded husband in Washington City she is helped by Captain Rogan McBride who later arrives at her farm near Gettysburg asking to store provisions, for the United States Army, in her barn.

The battle of Gettysburg brings another soldier into Caroline's life, Bridger, a childhood friend of Rogan's but now fighting for the south. The story is told from the point of view of Caroline, Bridger, and Rogan. Each gives a different perspective of the civil war. Caroline, now a widow, shows the reader problems working a farm close by the fighting and the worries of having a freed slave helping her. Rogan laments  the brutalities of war but shows kindness toward the young widow. Bridger wants to return to the south but professes it's not to continue with slavery but to protect his family's home and intends to free the slaves as he is now, after the death of his older brother, is the owner of his father's plantation.
