South of Superior by Ellen Airgood is set in the fictional town of McAllaster, but based on her home town of Grand Marais.
I was a bit confused at the beginning of the story as to why Madeline Stone left her home and fiance in Chicago and agreed to take care of the sister of Gladys whom her grandfather had lived with before his death. Especially as Madeline was abandoned by her mother and family as a baby and brought up by someone who took her in. (Gladys did send birthday cards).
Madeline soon becomes part of McAllaster with all it's quirky characters and finds out more about her family and living with Gladys and Arbutus gives her the stability she has looked for with a sense of belonging. Thrown into the mix is an old abandoned hotel that Gladys had closed but Madeline is anxious to reopen and generate an income.
South of Superior has all the makings of a Hallmark movie with everyone helping each other out and a romantic interest.
