The Spanish Bridegroom by Jean Plaidy

Jean Plaidy's historical novels were very popular in the 1960s and I found The Spanish Bridegroom recently at a library book sale. Eleanor Alice Burford Hibbert was a prolific writer and wrote over 200 books under many pen names including Jean Plaidy and Victoria Holt.

Phillip II of Spain may be remembered by most people as the husband of Mary Tudor (Henry VIII's daughter) and the Spanish Bridegroom follows his early life and his marriage into the  English Tudor  dynasty. Most of the royal families of Europe married cousins or relatives and are very intermingled, including the Spanish Royal Family Tree.

But these historical novels are not just peppered with facts and history, they bring to life the characters, their way of life, struggles and challenges that affect both them and those around them.
