The Bishop's Wife by Mette Ivie Harrison

The Bishop's Wife is a murder mystery set in Utah among the Mormon churches. Mette Ivie Harrison takes us into the workings of the Mormon community when she finds out a neighbor, and young mother, has disappeared.

The Mormon church is very much a patriarchal society which hindered Linda Wallheim's investigations into the disappearance of her neighbor, but she had a little more leeway with her position as the bishop's wife.

I found the novel an interesting look into Mormon life, but the mystery was a little hard to believe in places. Although some of the Mormon practices were explained some were not easily understandable and perhaps explanations at the back of the book might have been helpful.

Ward - An LDS church congregation. The members are from the same geographic area.
Singles Ward - In the book, it referred to singles wards where young people could meet and are separate from the ward their parents might belong to.
Sealed in the temple - Married couples are sealed for eternity. This becomes complicated when a husband remarries.
Note: as mentioned in the novel, the church can excommunicate someone and break the seal.
Living Ordinances - Rules to live by.
