Jane Bell reluctantly takes over a coaching inn when her husband dies and immediately has to deal with her resentful mother-in-law and her husband's brother who had anticipated the inn would be passed on to them and not Jane who had come from a genteel family and was not accustomed to working. But they underestimate the young widow and her perseverance to maintain and improve the old inn.
