Last week-end we visited Natchitoches (pronounced Nack-A-Tish) which is the oldest permanent settlement in Louisiana and established in 1714. Natchitoches is located in Central Louisiana and most people recognize it not only for the history steeped into the magnolia lined streets but also as the location where Steel Magnolias was filmed. Each Saturday the local farmer's market, Cane River Green Market, is set up beside Cane River Lake. We bought mayhaw jelly, rosemary scented soap and listened to the music. At one stall we met two woodcarvers Dan Mallette and Billy Phillips, who had been one of Dan's top students, and they showed us beautiful wood carvings. Dan, in 1989, was recognized as the best woodcarver in the world and received second place in 1992.
