Gray cargo military planes have been flying by my window today (12/10/08). Working close to the Naval Air Station Base in Fort Worth, cargo and fighter planes are not an unusual sight but this afternoon a rare treat came into view as a misshapen white aircraft, backed by a pale blue winter sky, was spotted just after 3:00 p.m. The Endeavour space shuttle, which last stopped in this area in 1997, had changed landing sites from Florida to California on Sunday because of bad weather and is heading for Cape Canaveral piggy backed on a 747 jet. The shuttle will be leaving Thursday morning and stopping in Louisiana before continuing its journey to the Florida coast. There are few areas where the shuttle can land but Fort Worth has a 12,000 foot landing strip making it a viable option. Cross country flights for the shuttle, piggy backed on an aircraft, are estimated to be in excess of $1.8M.
