You may remember Garrison Keillor of Prairie Home Companion fame and as in the radio series, he conjures up some unforgettable characters in Pontoon, a Novel of Lake Wobegon.
The first paragraph sets the tone:
Evelyn was an insomniac so when they say she died in her sleep, you have to question that.
From the cover:
In Lake Wobegon lives a good Lutheran lady who is quite prepared to die and wishes to be cremated and her ashes placed inside a bowling ball and dropped into the lake. . . Meanwhile the Detmer girl returns from California to marry her boyfriend aboard Wally's pontoon boat . . . On Saturday, a delegation of renegade Lutheran pastors from Denmark come to town on their tour of America . . and then there is Raoul with tinted shades and a rainbow sportcoat.
All these events come together on Lake Wobegon with a flying Elvis, a pontoon boat hired in readiness for the wedding, French champagne, a hot air balloon, giant duck decoys, and a bowling ball!
