Quote Mark v. Apostrophe

I learned a valuable tip today. If you are trying to place an apostrophe at the beginning of a word and a quote mark is automatically inserted instead (i.e. them abbreviated to ‘em)

hold the CTRL key down and press the apostrophe key, press it again and you will have the apostrophe facing the correct way.
