Mystery Novel First Lines

Whether you're scanning a novel at a book store or checking the first few pages online, it's the beginning words (the hook) that are enticing.  One of my favorite authors who inserts lots of zingers in his writing is Nelson DeMille. His opening lines always grab you.

Here are a few links to opening lines of popular novels. Is there a favorite you want to add?

Those were all terrific! I think it's hard (for me anyway) to craft the perfect first sentence.

I always thought the first line to The Lovely Bones was so good, and it is listed on a link. A first line can pull you in and never let go. I'm not fond of the waking up ones.

Hi, I came across your blog through various internet browsing ...and would like to comment that I found this post very interesting....! :-)

Some of the opening lines on the links you provided are so intriguing that now I have added those books in my personal books to read list :-)

Anyway, thanks again...!

the problem with reading great first lines is you want more, a few to be added to the wishlist I think!
